WIP Wednesday 7.31.13

I haven't posted a WIP Wednesday for a while due to our camping trip.  I'll show what I've been up to since then.  I can't believe it's the end of July already.  My son and I have been having oodles of fun.  Last night I couldn't sleep and got up in the middle of the night and seemed to find my quilting mojo.  Yeah!  I'm back in the groove.  I worked on both of my MMMRR13 last night and my Quilt Story Lucky Stars QA.  Can't wait to show you them.  I should have the borders on the Lucky Stars quilt today.

I'm hoping to get some of the Star Surround quilt pieces cut today.  What's one more QA when two are almost finished as tops?  (String of Pearls and Lucky Stars)

My MMMRR13 is quilted and getting a binding this week.  Hopefully for a Friday finish.  Here it is on the frame:

I made a block for the Picadilly Circle quilt I found in Quiltmaker Magazine.  He's my orange block minus the center circle.  I cut out all of the tedious black shapes while camping.  It seemed to take forever, but was a good camping project!

I have been waiting for the right strings quilt for my first string quilt.  This quilt, Rock Island Campfire is out of the last issue of Fons & Porter.  I love my first block.  I cut all the big pieces (sashing and squares) while on vacation.  Now all I need to do is start chain piecing some strings!  That will be a fun project since I just LOVE strings!

I made a Wedding Ring sample block and was going to cut a bazillion triangles during camping, but I can't find the sample block that I took camping AND I ran out of time.  That's okay.  It will surface when we put the camper in storage (hopefully not until after Thanksgiving).  I also have enough going on that I won't run out of things to do.  I love this block!  I'm thinking different calicos for it.

I made a back for a charity quilt for our LQG.  It won't be long until my six-year old will be in school and I can longarm as I please.  I sadly only used my longarm twice for the month of July.  It will wait.  He's only six once!

Holiday Sashing Inspiration

While on vacation in July I was lucky enough to visit a cute little quilt shop in PA.  Here's one of the scrappy quilts the owner showed me.  I had to take a pic of it to remember how the sashing was done.  I see something with sashing similar to this using my Accuquilt GO! Baby die on my bucket list.

MMMRR13 Progress

July has been such a busy month with camping, waterparks, and six-year old fun.  I finally had a chance to work on my MMMRR13 that has been loaded on my longarm frame since 7/7!  I decided after watching this weeks episode of Fons & Porter.  I felt the pattern on the front was so busy that I should just use my basic stipple and get it done.  I did not stipple the applique of course and also chose to not stipple the zigzag portion.  Here it is on the frame.  I finished the quilting last night.  I'm hoping to have it finished to show you the back on my Friday Finish.

Lantern-a-long @ Quilty Habit

Why why why do so many quilt alongs start in June/July?  Here's another QA.  This one looks very simple.  I don't know if I'll join or not, but 2.5" strips are sooooo easy to come by here.  Check it out:

Picadilly Circle

Here's a new project I saved to work on while camping last week.  I cut out all the funky shapes for my Picadilly Circle quilt.  Here's one of the blocks I did as a sample to see if I like it.  The block is not complete because it needs a circle in the middle.  I did not cut the circles yet.  This is a quilt from Quiltmaker Magazine.  I like it because it uses lots of scraps in different colorways.  Every morning while my husband and son were asleep I would cut shapes out of black fat quarters.  From the rest of the fabric I would cut pieces for my string quilt sashings.  Whew.  After FIVE days the cutting is complete.  I'm glad I did this in spurts.  I don't know when it will get sewn, I'll consider it a quilt "kit".  I can't believe that it took me all this time to cut it, and that there are only 12 blocks total.  Whatever.  I'm thankful for Accuquilt!

Charity Quilt for LQG

Here's another charity quilt top that I picked up at our LQG.  I made this simple back using a big piece from our "scrap" bin and a yard of some hunting/fishing fabric I bought at a garage sale for a quarter early this spring.  I was wondering where I would use that, but a yard of fabric for 25 cents can't be overlooked.  I think it gives this quilt the perfect masculine touch.  I'm not sure how I will longarm it yet.  It will probably happen sometime in September (perfect quilt for fall weather!)

Party at the Garage Sale!

This is some of the fabric that was left at an area quilter's garage sale after many many of my LQG members were there.  I know of at least eight of the members of my LQG were there before me.  BUT I'm soooo happy with the finds that I did get!  Whohoo!  Look at all of this yardage!  There's 60+ yards here.  This should make some nice quilt backs.

See that bundle in the bottom left? (minus the black on the bottom).  That will be my next QA at Happy Quilting stuff (Star Surround) -- I think.  We'll see the fab requirements next week.  See all those different plaids on the front right?  That's for my chicken quilt and my schoolhouse quilt.  See that white stuff on the back left?  Yep... white on white, baby!  That's my favorite one.  It's sitting on top of EIGHT yards of backing form something.  Happy dance happy dance.

Can you believe that I looked and looked and there was NO oranges or aqua to be found at the WHOLE garage sale?  Somebody had to have gotten it.  This lady had everything.

Oh, and on a happy note I sold my first quilt yesterday!!!  Woot woot.  AND the nice lady wants another one (possibly in August).  I'll be cutting it on vacation.

Wedding Ring Sample Block -- Accuquilt

Here's one of the little cutting projects I plan to work on while camping this summer.  I'll be taking some scraps and my Accuquilt supplies and cutting a few quilts while camping.  I'm going to give my sewing machine a break that week.  I'm really happy with this sweet Wedding Ring block.  It's a lot of pieces for the 7" finished block.  It uses the 2" square die (55022), and the 1.5" finished HST die (55319).  It's quite a few pieces, but I think it's worth it!

I found a pattern sheet in one of the garage sale books that I bought this summer.  I think this will be a great pattern for my scrappy calico prints.

Rock Island Campfires

I've been waiting and waiting for the right project(s) to use my strings.  I have tons of strings -- sorted strings!  They are sorted by color and ready to go.  I just don't want to waste them on the wrong project.  Mind you, that many of these strings have been given to me or it's those little pieces that someone else would throw away.  Here's my first major string project.  It's from Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting Magazine, July/August 2013.  Here's my sample block:

I made this test block last week.  I'll be cutting all the pieces I need for the rest of it (except for the strings... I'll be winging it with them) while camping.  Ironic that this quilt is called Rock Island Campfires.  I'll have to name mine Mill Run Campfires.  (Mill Run, PA -- Yogi Bear Campground)

I'm actually going with the color suggestions of red, pink, black, green and blue for the strings AND going with the color suggestions for the centers, inner sashing and outer sashing.  AND believe it or not I'm going to try to make it the correct size.  Who is this girl?

WIP Wednesday 7.17.13

Here's what happened this week:

I completed my squares (but didn't trim them yet) for the Lucky Stars QA at Quilt Story.

I completed my And Sew On... BOM at Quiet Play

Here's two blocks I made for our LQG swap.  This completes all my blocks through December!

Here's my Aiming for Accuracy block this week.  It doesn't look like everybody else's block, but I'm going to let it is for now.  This quilt will be scrappy enough that nobody local should notice the mistake.

I made some sample blocks for my Aunt Reen's Jelly Roll QA.  If I use the green and blue, I'll be consistent on my background fabric.  This is too scrappy for me.

LQG Blocks for Sue

Here's my simple finish for this week.  I realize that it is only two blocks, BUT these are the last two blocks I need to make for our local quilt guild swap.  Blocks are due at our Christmas party in December, but I am done in July.  Whohoo!  These blocks are for Sue.  These pictures don't do her fabric justice.  Her fabric choice for this quilt is just gorgeous.  It's a two-block quilt pattern.  We are making these blocks and she is making the others.  I'm so happy this little project is done!

Quilt Story Lucky Stars QA - Step 2

Step 2 of the Quilt Story Lucky Stars QA was easy peasy!  Here are my eight blocks.  They are sewn, but not trimmed.  Whew!  This QA is all caught up.  Thanks for an easy one, Quilt Story.

Aiming for Accuracy - Lesson 3

Here's Unit B5 for the Aiming for Accuracy QA.  Yep.  I know it doesn't look like everybody else's block.  I didn't cut the quarter square triangles correctly.  I thought I knew what I was doing and went ahead and whipped all my sub units together.  Then I realized that they were not all the same.  I just kept arranging and putting them together.  I could have done a better job of breaking up the colors by value.  I'm just going to let this one ride.  The recipient of this quilt doesn't have much to do with quilting and will be happy with a quilt.  Maybe the scrappiness of the quilt in whole won't draw your eye to this block.  This is supposed to be a learning experience.  ...and guess what?  When I was finished this block measured 21.5" x 21.5".  That's what it was supposed to be!!!  Mission accomplished!

Aunt Reen's Jelly Roll QA

I'm way way behind on my Aunt Reen's Jelly Roll QA  It's a laid back QA with a simple pattern.  I've cut and sewn some pieces, but I'm not happy with the color choices.  this is a great pattern that could be used with scraps.  These blocks will end up in my orphan box.  I am glad I did some tester blocks before I did all the cutting.  Maybe if I just did the same background and all scrappy blocks it would be okay.  It's just too scrappy for me this time.  I think all reds and the same background might happen someday.

Q3 Finish-A-Long Goals

It's time to set my goals for the Q3 Finish-A-Long.  These should be complete finishes.  I'm not going to set too many goals this quarter because I have two planned vacations and a six-year-old starting KINDERGARTEN!  We've still gotta hit the waterparks this summer.  Here are my projects that I hope to still finish this quarter:

String of Pearls QA -- Top is complete; back needs made; needs quilted and a binding.
This was a fun quilt along with Christa Quilts.  Check it out here.

Modern Mini Mystery Round Robin 2013 -- Top is complete; back is made; needs quilted and a binding.  This was a round robin event hosted by Michelle at Quilts From My Crayon Box.

(Sorry I can't show you the whole quilt top.  The big reveal date for the MMMRR13's isn't until 7/24.

I'd also like to finish my Lucky Stars QA quilt from Quilt Story.  Right now I only have the stars and simple blocks done.  I still need to finish the patchwork blocks, put the blocks together, make a back, quilt, and bind it.  Whew.  That's a big order to finish this for this quarter.  But we'll see!   The link up for this QA is 8/7.  I plan to straight line quilt it, so that shouldn't take too long.  It's all the other steps that will be a challenge to finish.  Here are my stars in Civil War Crossings fabric:

That's it for my Q3 FAL goals -- three big quilts.  Make it happen!

Check out what others are going to finish AND link up your goals for the Q3 FAL here.
